As the French sought to control access to knowledge in Vietnam, they enforced a nation-wide colonial language policy. Over time, their influence extended beyond changing the writing system to altering the Vietnamese lexicon. Through archiving and contextualizing French loanwords in Vietnamese, the print publication questions whether they exist merely as a manifestation of French colonialism or have become an artefact of the vernacular.

Sophia the humanoid robot falls within the uncanny valley spectrum. The 128-page publication follows a staircase structure. Each layer reflects a different depth, through which we perceive Sophia: starting with her appearance, then our assumptions about her, and finally a true understanding of her intentions and our reaction towards her.
Dis/connected 2022 A0 poster
Digitally printed gradient
Screen-printed silver type
Dis/connected is a typeface and an A0 mixed-media poster based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s quote: “I have never resisted a wave.” The poster is an interplay of contrast: between stencils and the connected script, between the screen-printed type and digital gradient. Through juxtaposition, it serves as a metaphor for how we live as individuals, yet act and react as a collective.
Dis/connected was presented in the exhibition “Over/Under” at the Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts in 2023.
